TOPLISS, Annie     (1882 - 1931)

The death of Mrs Annie Topliss, wife of Mr Alfred Topliss, Carapooee West, which sad event occurred at St Arnaud after a long illness, on Thurday, was heard with much regret throughout the district where she is well known, and held in the highest esteem, and much sympathy is felt for the bereaved husband. The late Mrs Topliss, who was aged 49 years was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs W Torney, of Carapooee West, and she had been associated with the district all her life. About four years ago she underwent a very serious operation, resulting in the amputation of her leg. She bore her sufferings with fortitude and christian resignation that was most edifying. A large circle of friends deeply regret her death, and extend their sympathy to the bereaved husband, and also to her sister, Mrs J Palmer, McMahon Street. The remains were interrred yesterday at St Arnaud cemetery, the funeral arrangements being carried out by Mr WL Kell. The coffin was carried by Messrs Jas., Jos., Michael and William Torney (brothers), and the pall bearers were  - Messrs Sam, John Torney (brothers), Robert, Percy and George Torney (nephews) and W Topliss (brother-in-law). The Rev. Canon Macmichael carried out the funeral arrangements.

TORNEY, Agnes Nairn    ( -  1951)

Many friends and relatives attended the funeral of Mrs Agnes Nairn Torney at Red Cliffs on Wednesday. The cortege left her home at Cardross at 2.30 pm. The burial service was conducted by the rev. H Hall and the casket was carried by Messrs HJ Passmore, A Barker, B Harding and WJ Torney. Among the many wreaths were those from the Cardross mother's Club, members of Cardross Hospital Auxiliary, members of the War Widows Guild and directors and management of the Red Cliffs Co-op Packing Co. Arrangements were in the hands of E York and Son. Mrs Torney was an original settler at Cardross, and always took a keen interest in district affairs, particularly with regard to education. She was the only woman present at a meeting, which was held under a tree, of parents anxious to secure a school for Cardross. She was a foundation member of the Cardross Mothers Club in which she retained a keen interest for about 25 years. She was also an active worker for the Red Cross and Cardross Hospital Auxiliary.

Death of Private Cal Torney

Mr and Mrs Jacob Torney of Tongala, were advised yesterday of the death of their eldest son, Private Cal Torney, which took place at Woodman's Point quarantine Station, Western Australia, on Saturday from pneumonic Influenza. Private Torney enlisted in June last and sailed for the front in the Boonah, which was recalled when the armistice was signed. With a number of others he contracted influenza and some days ago his parents were advised of his serious illness. Private Torney came to Tongala when he was very young and he was practically reared there. He was a bright lad, and his sunny disposition made him a favorite with everyone. News of his death has excited feeling of deep sorrow and keen sympathy is felt for his bereaved parents.

TORNEY, Edward     (1885 - 1930)

The death of a well known and repsected resident of Donald district, on the person of Mr Edward Torney, took place at Melbourne on Tuesday last. The late Mr Torney was born at Donald forty six years ago and had lived in ths district ever since. He had many friends here and was known as a hard working, steady resident, although for some years he had been handicapped by serious illness. He leaves a widow, one daughter (Gladys) and one grand daughter, for whom much sympathy is felt. Mrs McQueen (Rupanyup) is a sister, while the following brothers are also left; Thomas (Stawell), Jacob (Tongala), John (Patchewollock), William (Brim) and Samuel (Murtoa). The funeral took place on Wednesday, many friends following the remains to their last resting place in the Methodist portion of the Donald Cemetery. The coffin bearers were Messrs. C Torney, J Torney, E Storer, V Harris, N Steer, A Storer. Pall bearers were Messrs J Hannah, WT Muir, G Pole, W Torney, W Rose and Allen Cumming.

TORNEY, Edward Charles     (c1923 - 1967)

WARRACK FUNERAL FOR FORMER BRIM MAN

A man who was born at Brim, Mr Edward Charles Torney, of Maidstone, will be buried at Warracknabeal cemetery this afternoon. Aged 44, he died suddenly at Geelong. Mr Torney was a son of the late Mr and Mrs William Torney of Brim. His father was a shire employee. He is survived by two daughters, Alice and Beverley. Brothers and sisters: Clarrie (Brim); Laurel (Mrs Teflar, St Kilda); Evelyn (Mrs Alberts, Maidstone); Thelma (Mrs Schoonhoven, Colac); Hilda (Mrs Baldwin, Wemen); Dulcie (Mrs Sanderson, Footscray). Living all his younger life in Brim, he enlisted for the army at Warracknabeal. On discharge he lived at Maidstone, working as a ship's chandler. Mr Torney will be buried following a 3 pm service at WB Gardiner and Sons Funeral Palour, Warracknabeal Methodist Minister Rev H W Abbey, will read the services.

TORNEY, Harriet     (1866 - 1934)
Stawell News - Saturday, 6th January 1934

Mrs Harriet Torney, of Mary Street, Stawell, died at the Stawell hospital on Thursday. Born in Landsborough 69 years ago, the late Mrs Torney was the wife of Thomas Torney, of Stawell, and was married at Warracknabeal, 50 years ago. Always connected with district, many friends will mourn the loss of Mrs Torney who leaves six children to whom sympathy is extended. She was the mother of thirteen children, seven of whom predeceased her. They are Leah (deceased), Jane (deceased), Thomas, Hugh (deceased), Clarence James (deceased), Albert (deceased), William John, Charles Edward, Ellen Caroline (Mrs Stevens), Rose (deceased), Joseph Nicholas, Ernest and Verna (deceased). The remains were interred in the Stawell cemetery yesterday afternoon. The coffin bearers were: W Torney, J Torney, E Torney, E Torney (Sons), C Torney (Nephew), S Stevens (son-in-law); and the pall bearers W Jamieson, W Jordon, J Blake, J Leslie, T Hardwick, J King.  Rev C O Andersen conducted the burial service, and Mr R McKenzie had charge of the mortuary arrangements.

TORNEY, Hilda Muriel      (1903 - 1982)

It was with deep regret that residents learned of the death at the Ballarat Base Hospital on Monday, July 5, of Mrs Hilda Muriel Torney.

Mrs Torney was 79 years of age and has resided in Beaufort for many years and took an active part in a number of women's organizations of the town as well as the Uniting Church and Bowling Associated.
She was a life member of the Beaufort Fire Brigade Ladies Auxiliary; being treasurer for 33 years.

She is survived by three sons Messrs. Alan, Max and Keith Torney, a daughter Mrs Shirley Coulter. She also leaves other relatives to mourn her passing.

Her husband, William, predeceased her.

After a service at St Andrew's Uniting Church, on 8th July, the large cortege moved to the Beaufort Cemetery.

Casket bearers at the church and cemetery were Messrs. Jeff Torney (grandson), Stephen Torney (grandson), Barry Torney (grandson), Peter Torney (grandson), Ross Torney (grandson) and Michael Sheridan (grandson-in-law).

The members of the Beaufort Fire Brigade Ladies Auxiliary formed a guard of honour at the church.

Among the many floral tributes were wreaths from the Mum's Auxiliary, Beaufort; President, Committee and Members Beaufort Junior Football Club, Beaufort Branch Country Women's Association; Uniting Church Guild Members; Members Beaufort Rural Fire Brigade; Fire Brigades Ladies Auxiliary; President and Members St Arnaud RSL; Friends at Ripon Homes.

Rev K. Wright conducted the services at the church and graveside. Mr E.K. Crouch, of Beaufort, carried out the funeral arrangements.

TORNEY, Hugh    (1838 -  1895)
The Donald Times - Tuesday, 22nd January 1895

On Saturday morning last Mr Hugh Torney died after a painful illness of many months' duration. The deceased had suffered terribly from cancer in the throat, and although treated by several medical men and operated on at St Arnaud Hospital, this insidious disease had taken too firm a hold on his constitution, and he gradually declined until he died from sheer exhaustion. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon and was largely attended. The funeral service was conducted by P E Carne, Esq., JP. The deceased was one of the oldest residents of the Donald district, and had been engaged as a contractor for many years past in Donald. He leaves a widow and a family of nine children. The late Mr Torney made many friends, by whom his illness was lightened in many ways, although he bore his painful suffering with a fortitudee that almost amounted to heroism.

At a meeting of the members of the Fire Brigade on Tuesday evening it was unanimously decided to initiate a benefit performance on behalf of the widow and family of the late Hugh Torney. The deceased was a foundation member of the brigade, and it would be a worthy tribute to his memory to attempt to some extent to relieve the monetary anxieties, which his long and painful illness must have entailed on his widow and family.

We regret to have to record the death of Hugh Torney, son of Mr Torney, of Donald, which took place yesterday, after a long and severe illness. The funeral will leave his parent's residence at two o'clock tomorrow afternoon, when the members of the Donald Fire Brigade, and Star of Avon Tent, IOR, are requested to follow his remains to their last resting place - the Donald Cemetery.

The funeral of Hugh Torney took place on Sunday last, the remains being conveyed to their last resting place, the Donald Cemetery. The coffin, which was covered by a pall and the deceased's cap and tunic laid on it, was carried on the fire-engine, the members of the brigades, under the leadership of captain Hearn, acting as pall-bearers. A large number of vehicles and horsemen followed, as well as the children of the Wesleyan Sunday School, of which the deceased was a member. As the cortege moved from the deceased's late residence the fire bell tolled at intervals, and the road to the cemetery was lined with spectators. Rev Mr Farley read the burial service in a solemn and impressive manner. Much sympathy is expressed for Mr and Mrs Torney in their bereavement.

TORNEY, Isabella       (1884 - 1932)
St Arnaud Mercury - Saturday, 23rd April 1932

The death occurred suddenly on Thursday morning, about 11 o'clock, from heart failure, of Mrs Isabella Torney, of Carapooee West, wife of Mr Wm Torney. Deceased, who was 47 years of age, was born at Carapooee West, and was the second daughter of Mr and Mrs John Thwaites, of Carapooee West. She had resided in the district the whole of her life. She leaves a family of three daughters and three sons, viz,  Mrs DA Simpson, Paradise; Mrs Vic Proctor, Kooreh; Miss Dorothy Torney, Carapooee West; Eric W., Alan John and Clifford Harold Torney all of Carapooee West. The funeral will take place today (Saturday), at 2pm, the cortege leaving her late residence for the Stuart Mill cemetery.

TORNEY, Jacob    (1870 - 1954)

A wide circle of friends regret to learn of the passing of one of the district's highly esteemed pioneer residents in the person of Mr Jacob Torney, of Tongala.

Deceased, who was 84 years of age was born at Lexton. he served his apprenticeship as a blacksmith at Donald, and it was at that town that he married Miss Elizabeth Langridge, in 1895. Four years later he came to Tongala and established a blacksmith business, and was also associated in farming pursuits. About 15 years ago he retired as a blacksmith, but continued his farming activities.

Although he did not actively participate, he was keenly interested in sport. An expert accordionist, he often played in those earlier times for dances throughout the district. He was also a former member of the Kyabram Brass Band.

As a member of the committee of the Deakin Shire Hall, in the days when Mr Castles was engineer, he assisted in the construction of the hall, and was always ready to help any organisation functioning for the good of the town, including the Progress Association and Water Trust.

He was one of the foundation members of the Tongala  Fire Brigade, and was the first supplier of milk to the then Tongala Cheese Factory. He was an enthusiast with the gun, and competed in district shoots in the early days of the sport in Tongala, and with his buggy and horse took part in organized hare drives.

He is survived by his widow, two sons, Clifford (Tongala), Donald (Kyabram), three daughters Gladys (Mrs Crack, Waltham), Iva (Mrs Woods, Sydney), Mignonette (Mrs Nobel, Cobram). He was predeceased by one son, Clarence, who was killed in the First World War.

The funeral took place on Tuesday to the Tongala Cemetery. Prior to the lengthy cortege leaving his late residence at Tongala, a service was conducted by Rev E Nixon, who also officiated at the graveside. Numerous floral tributes were borne by relatives and friends.

TORNEY, Jane    (1847 -  1922)

THE LATE MRS JANE TORNEY

Yet another of our oldest residents, in the person of Mrs Jane Torney, has passed away. The late Mrs Torney was born in Staffordshire, England 77 years ago, and arrived in Adelaide with her parents when 10 years of age. Later the moved to Ararat, and thence to Peter's diggings (Carapooee.) 59 years ago she married the late Mr Hugh Torney, who died in Donald 27 years ago. The family residence is situated on the spot now occupied by the railway station. The deceased lady was a well-known and highly respected pioneer, and for many years followed her profession as mid-wife in Donald and district. For the past 16 years she had resided at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr W Bandy, of Donald, and her kind and loving disposition had made her popular with all whom she came in contact, particularly the children. Previous to her death she had been ailing for about two years, and leaves a family of nine to mourn their loss, the sons being Thomas (Landsborough), Jacob (Tongala), John (Patchewollock), Wm (Brim) Joseph (Temora, NSW), Edward (Donald) and Samuel (Rupanyup). The daughters are Rose (Mrs McQueen) of Rupanyup, and Jane (Mrs Bandy) of Donald. The funeral, which was a large and representative one, took place at Donald yesterday afternoon, the Rev J W Crean officiating at the graveside. Six sons of the deceased acted as coffin bearers, the pall-bearers being Messrs. Geo Pope, O Meyr, E Howard, WG Parse, and four nephews, Messrs W & J Torney, and Thos and H Storer. Mr Reg Bandy had charge of the funeral arrangements.

TORNEY, Joseph Nicholas   (1907 - 1960)

The death occurred at the Maryborough Hospital on Tuesday evening of Mr Joseph Nicholas Torney of Moonambel, at the age of 53 years. He was a son of the late Thomas and Harriet Torney, and was born at Frenchmans. He was a bricklayer by trade. Sincere sympathy is offered to his sister Ellen (Mrs R Stephens, Stawell) and brothers Thomas (Stawell), William (Beaufort), and Ernest (Stawell). The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon leaving Messrs Fred Crouch and son's parlor after a service conducted by Rev'd A Rutter. Coffin bearers were Messrs Stan Stephen (brother-in-law), C Torney (Cousin), Alan Torney (nephew) and Ron Murray (relative). Pall bearers were Messrs W Torney (brother), Stan and Leslie Stephens, J Currie, P Jackson (relatives), Lindsay Good and j Driscoll (rep Barkly and Moonambel friends) and RW Scott. Many beautiful floral tributes were place around the casket.

TORNEY, Mary       (1849 - 1913)
St Arnaud Mercury -Wednesday, 19th March 1913

The friends of Mrs Mary Torney, relict of William Torney, will regret to hear of her death, which took place on Monday at Carapooee West, which has been her home for a very lengthy period. The late Mrs Torney was born in Birmingham, England, and was 64 years of age. She was quite a child when she came to Australia, landing in Adelaide in 1854. Coming over to Victoria subsequently she resided for a time in the Ararat district, and then removed to Peters, where she settled. Her husband was accidently killed close upon 20 years ago. There is a grown up family of 12, for whom much sympathy is expressed. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, the remains which were enclosed in a neat oak coffin being interred in the St Arnaud cemetery in the presence of many mourners.  St Arnaud Mercury - Wednesday, 26th March, 1913 By the death of Mrs Wm Torney, sen., there has been removed from our midst one of the oldest and most highly respected of local residents. Though a patient sufferer for a long time, and her death not unexpected, still the sad news caused profound expressions of sorrow on all sides. The late Mrs Torney was a woman with a heart to feel for other's woes, and of a very kind and neighbourly disposition. In sickness, bereavement, or trouble of any kind, her's was the voice to cheer and comfort, and her's the hand held forth to help. Very many can speak of kindnesses received from her, for she was indeed a true friend at all times and will be greatly missed. The deceased carried on farming operations here with much success, but a few years back she retired and had lately been residing with her son, Mr Wm Torney.

She leaves a family of twelve to mourn their loss. TORNEY, William John     (1897 - 1965)

Mr William John Torney, who passed away suddenly in his 68th year, at Ballarat, on Monday night, October 11, was a highly respected resident of Beaufort for about 30 years.

He previously lived at Buangor for a number of years and was born in the Avoca district at Landsborough. For many years Mr Torney was a railway employee at Buangor and Beaufort. After retiring from the railways he worked at Messrs. George and Larkens' Beaufort sawmill. A man of a quiet, friendly disposition, he was well liked by all who knew him. During World War II he was a member of the Beaufort Platoon of the 20th Btn. VDC. He was also an official of the Beaufort Cycling Club and a great follower of the sport. Mr Torney leaves a widow, three sons, a daughter, three daughters-in-law, a son-in-law and 15 grandchildren. The sons are Messrs Alan Torney and Keith Torney (Beaufort) and Max Torney (St Arnaud); the daughter being  Mrs L Coulter, of Burrumbeet.

Following a service conducted by Rev. K.H. Hamill, at the Beaufort Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, October 13, the remains of the late Mr Torney were interred in the Beaufort Cemetery. There was a large attendance of relatives and friends at the funeral. The casket was borne to the grave by Messrs Alan and Max Torney (sons), Mr L Coulter (son-in-law), T McQueen (cousin), Stan and Les Stevens (nephews). Rev. K.H. Hamill conducted the Presbyterian burial service. Among the many floral tributes were special wreaths from Beaufort Bowling Club Associates, Beaufort Presbyterian Choir, Beaufort Fire Brigade Ladies Club, R.S.L Ladies Auxiliary, President, Councillors and Staff Shire of Ripon, Ladies indoor Bias Bowling Club, Beaufort Urban Fire Brigade, St Arnaud RSL, Beaufort Mums' Auxiliary, President and Member Beaufort Branch CWA, Beaufort SS Mothers' Club. Mr E.K. Crouch, of Beaufort, carried out the funeral arrangements.

WALKER, Rachael Beatrice   (1891 - 1968)

The death occured today 19th January, 1968 at the Wimmera Base Hospital of Mrs Rachael Beatrice Walker of 149 Lloyd St, Dimboola at the age of 76 years. Her parents were the late Mr & Mrs Jacob Storer and she was born at Gerang. Deceased who lived in Gerang for most of her life was the wife of the late Mr Thomas Ernest Walker who predeceased her 19 years ago. A son Ron (Melbourne) and two daughters Gwen (Mrs Smith, Gerang) and Joyce (Mrs Newman, Melbourne) survive her, She was closely associated with Dimboola Methodist Church and its ladies guild and also the elderly citizens club. Arrangements were made with Mr G Greenway to conduct the funeral at Dimboola Cemetery tomorrow, Saturday, following a service at Dimboola Methodist Church at 11 am.

WALKER, Thomas Ernest     (1889 - 1949)

Mr Thomas Ernest Walker, aged 59 years, died at his home, Lloyd Street, Dimbools, shortly before noon on Friday. He was born at Gerang, where he farmed until he retired to live in Dimboola several years ago. Deceased was married to Miss Storer who survives him as well as a son and two daughters, viz. - Ronald, Gwen and Joyce. Brothers and Sisters of deceased are Messrs W G & A H Walker, Mrs F Warrick (dec), Mrs T Bartlett (dec), Mrs Newburn, Mrs H Lawne and Mrs T Harmer. The funeral took place at the Dimboola cemetery on Saturday, the services at the home and graveside being conducted by Rev Gordon, Methodist Minister. The masonic service was conducted at the graveside by Rev L Langdon, six nephews of the late Mr Walker were casket bearers - Messrs Arthur, Fred, William and Ken Walker, Merv and Wes Warrack. Messrs Martindale and sons had charge of the mortuary arrangements.

WALKER, William George     (1883 - 1962)

Mr William George Walker, of Gerang, died at the Dimboola and District Hospital on Saturday 21st April 1962 at the age of 78 years. Born in Gerang he was a son of the late Mr & Mrs William Walker. He married Miss Amy Gertrude Storer who predeceased him seven years ago. Sons and daughters are Marjorie Doreen (Mrs J Taylor, Gerang), William Jacob George (Minyip), Nellie Rosina Eugina (Gerang), Arthur Thomas Joseph (Gerang), Ethel Elizabeth May (Mrs R Mellings, Macedon) and Frederick Gordon Henry (Dimboola). Brothers and Sisters are Arthur (Dimboola), Hanna (Mrs Lawne, Dimboola), and Henrietta (Mrs V Newburn, Nhill). The funeral took place at the Dimboola cemetery on Monday, following a service by the Rev I Scutt at the Methodist Church. Coffin bearers were Messrs T Bartlett, K Walker, M Walker, R Taylor, M Warrick, G Smith. The funeral arrangements were conducted by Mr G Greenaway of Dimboola.

WESTWOOD, Elizabeth Alice      (1878 - 1931)

As briefly announced in the "Herald" on Monday last, Mr Thomas Westwood of Yeo Dene, suffered a sad bereavement on Sunday morning by the death of his wife after a brief illness. She was of a kindly disposition. the late Mrs Westwood was born at Branxholme fifty three years ago, being a daughter of Mrs Storer and the late Mr Joseph Storer highly respected residents of that locality. She leaves a husband, four sons (Stan., Clyde, Rupert and Lindsay), and three daughters (Pearl, Lorna and Ruby) to mourn their loss. The funeral, which was largely attended, took place to the Colac cemetery on Monday afternoon. The coffin bearers were messrs, W Storer, L Storer, J Storer, and F Storer (brothers), S Westwood and C Westwood (sons) and C Crabbe (brother in law). The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev L.H. Wiliams.
